Mark Carter
May 22, 1959 - September 9, 2026
Mark Nix Carter of Pleasant Ridge, who lived a life marked by kindness, skill, hard work and quiet devotion to the people he loved, died suddenly and unexpectedly on September 9, 2026, following a brave and dignified battle with cancer.
Mark was a man whose presence brought steadiness and warmth to every part of his life. He was known by those who loved him as kind, handy, and selfless, and he carried those qualities with him in his home, at work, and among his many friends. He faced life with a practical spirit and a generous heart, always willing to lend a hand, solve a problem, or offer encouragement when it was needed most.
Mark attended Berkley Schools and later, in his thirties, while working full-time and raising a young family, he earned an Associate Degree in Heating, Cooling and Refrigeration. That accomplishment reflected the determination and discipline that guided much of his life. He believed in hard work, in learning by doing, and in providing for those he loved through steady effort and commitment. Those values were evident throughout his career and in the way he approached every responsibility entrusted to him.
He spent 21 years with the Berkley School District Maintenance Department, where his dependable nature and mechanical knowledge made him a trusted part of the team. He later devoted 25 years to Local 636 Pipefitters, where he continued to build a reputation for being hardworking, capable, and respected by those around him. Mark was also a proud SAL Member of the Berkley American Legion, where he made many friends and, for many years, serviced the Legion’s mechanical equipment. His willingness to help and his quiet expertise were deeply appreciated by all who knew him there.
Mark’s greatest joy, however, was found in his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Mollie Mobley, who shared with him a life filled with love, companionship, and countless cherished memories. He also leaves behind his mother, Margaret Roy; his children, Alison, Jenna, and Stefan Carter; stepson Jack Mobley; his grandson, Brayden Carter; and his siblings, Carlissa Firth and Joel Roy and his wife Susie. He is also survived by multiple nephews and cousins, with whom Mark felt a very special bond, as well as many cherished friends who became chosen family. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Roy.
Mark was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He treasured time spent with the people closest to him and took great pride in being present for the moments that mattered. His family knew him as someone they could count on, someone who showed love through action, and someone who gave of himself without hesitation. The bonds he formed were deep and lasting, and the memories he created will remain a source of comfort and strength in the years ahead.
He was passionate about fishing and especially enjoyed taking friends and his children out on the boat. Annual salmon charters were among the experiences he looked forward to most, and those outings became treasured traditions filled with laughter, companionship, and the simple joy of being on the water. In retirement, he appreciated a quieter, slower pace of life and found contentment in the everyday pleasures that suited him best. He also took great satisfaction in perfecting the grilling of the perfect steak, a task he approached with the same care and attention he brought to so many other parts of his life. Above all, he valued a less hectic life, one that allowed him to enjoy time with Mollie and reflect on the many happy experiences they shared together.
Those who knew Mark will remember a man who was strong without being boastful, generous without expecting recognition, and dependable in every season of life. His legacy is found in the family he loved, the friendships he nurtured, the work he completed with pride, and the many lives he touched along the way. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Memorial Gathering will take place on Wednesday, September 16th from 3-8pm at Sawyer Fuller Funeral Home. A service will be held at 7pm to honor and bless Mark's life
